Catholic colleges and universities in the USA have had a long and distinguished history, from the founding of Georgetown University in 1789. The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities reports that there are over 200 Catholic higher education institutions in the US representing approximately 686,000 students. These include Catholic universities and colleges and Catholic universities and colleges with seminaries.

From the oldest to the newest (Wyoming Catholic College, founded in 2007), Catholic colleges and universities aren't just for Catholics. Often based on the principle of serving everyone equally, they offer undergraduate bachelor's degrees, associate's degrees and certificates that meet the needs of a diverse student body from here and abroad. Programs include religious and theological studies, but also a range of programs you would expect at any world-class university (liberal arts, sciences, commerce, law, nursing, dental, education, fine arts, technology, etc.). Many of the USA's Catholic colleges and universities have achieved national and international attention for their teaching-based programs designed to encourage student commitment to service and social justice no matter what the major.
