Preparing for Agriculture and Bio-Resources School
If you are considering study in agriculture or bio-resources, your post-secondary planning process should begin in high school. Agriculture and bio-resources programs and schools can be competitive and are rigorous; therefore, it is important to plan your high school courses accordingly. Some of the classes that you will want to take are natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences and English/ communications to ensure that you are well prepared for the schools and programs that make your list.

If you are still in high school and are thinking about going to school for agriculture and bio-resources, there are several additional things that you can do to prepare and increase your chances of success:

  • Validate your interest in agriculture and bio-resources. For instance, get involved with agricultural clubs, such as 4-H, or other outdoor activities in your community. Schools value the fact that you have seriously considered the field and know what it involves. Work experience - paid or volunteer - can also increase your chances of being admitted, particularly to programs involving internships, and is an achievement often regarded highly by admissions committees.

  • Undertake to read and study independently. Examples of some short courses or workshops available include: First Aid/CPR, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Farm Safety, and Pesticide Use for Work. This will also help you if admission requirements include an interview, since you will be able to impress the committee with the knowledge you have built up of terms and issues specific to this area of study.

  • Admissions committees may also be interested in a student's personal qualities, which can be developed through participating in extracurricular activities. Consider joining or even starting school clubs, whether related to your area of interest or not. This is also a good way to develop demonstrated leadership skills, which are an important aspect of any competitive application.
