Women's colleges and universities have played an important role in bringing about educational equality and providing options for women. In fact, they still do! Women and men haven't always had equal access to higher education in America. The development of women's colleges in the US goes back to the early 1800's, and while their numbers declined after many institutions went co-ed in the 1970's, the more than 50 women's colleges still open today continue to offer excellent opportunities for postsecondary study.
The concept that women are restricted to traditionally "female" careers has thankfully been mostly done away with! But there are still areas of study in which women are underrepresented. Whether public or private, independent or church-related, four-year or two-year, women's colleges in the US strive to create an environment where students are free to explore any area of study, and where teachers and mentors encourage everyone's potential. From engineering to environmental protection, music to management, women's college and university programs are innovative, challenging and above all, there for you.
So if you're curious about all the different university and college offerings no matter what you plan to study, don't forget to check out what's available at women's colleges and universities in the US.
